A smart lock to outsmart teens

Teenagers want freedom. Parents want accountability. This inevitably leads to a two-concern pile-up at the intersection of adulthood and adolescence.

Lack of accountability is as age-appropriate to teens as infant spit-up on everything you wear. As my oldest press for more come-and-go freedom, I’m conflicted on many levels. His teen bowsprit world-view sees only ahead, slicing through life trailing a spray of collateral implications beyond his comprehensive capabilities; running off and leaving the front door unlocked all day is no big deal to him, dashing off without a key to get back in the door that swings shut behind him leads to a nocturnal doorbell serenade.

We both know it’s true. We’ve been there. I can’t tell you how many times I had to check first (and once those on the second) floor windows of my childhood home to gain access after a day on the open seas of adolescent wanderlust. I had a key. I  had no idea where to find it. My little apples have fallen well within the drip line of our family tree; here is now, only now matters. I’d get mad if their spirit didn’t keep me young on some level.

Kwikset to the rescue

Every dad will like this. DaddyMoms will love it. Engadget reports Kwikset has created a combination deadbolt with remote capability. Combination deadbolts are nothing new; see one on a front door and it’s an even bet there’s a teenager in that house who can’t be trusted to keep track of a key.

What sets this bad boy apart from the rest is its wireless interconnectivity. Thanks to Kwikset’s Home Connect Technology, It can be opened with a remote fob, by your home automation, or via the web using their nifty Control 4 home automation Set this system up, and its SmartCode will automatically turn off  (or set) your alarm, turn on a set of lights in the house, and keep track of who comes and goes. I especially like that last part. Now, if only it could intercept phone calls from undesirables….
